What does the switchover mean for me?

The digital switchover is the process of switching the traditional analogue TV signal over to a digital TV signal. The digital TV switchover is already taking place on a region-by-region basis across the UK between now and 2012. With Sky, you can enjoy a complete digital solution, allowing you to receive and record digital TV with a Sky+ or Sky+HD box, without having to re-tune like some Freeview boxes.

Already a Sky TV customer? While your main TV is set for digital, remember second TV sets, DVD recorders and VCRs may be affected.

Will I need to buy a new TV?Show

No. Virtually all TVs will work after the digital switchover - even old or black and white televisions - as long as you can connect it to a digital box like a Sky+, SkyHD or Sky+HD box. If you're buying a new TV, look for the ‘digital tick' logo. This indicates that the equipment is designed to work after the digital switchover.

Will my video still work?Show

Your recorder may be affected after the switchover, with some DVD and video recorders losing the ability to record one programme while you watch another.
Sky+ and Sky+HD boxes are a digital TV switchover solution and digital video recorder in one, meaning you can continue to record and store your favourite programmes to watch.

Will I need to retune my TV?Show

With Sky, you won't need to retune your TV when the digital switchover happens so you won't miss out on any of your favourite TV programmes, unlike with some Freeview boxes.

Do I need a new aerial?Show

With Sky, there's no need to replace or upgrade your aerial. You will receive a digital quality picture and sound through your minidish. Some Freeview customers may need to upgrade their aerials after the digital switchover dates, which, if required, can cost up to £180.

How will the rest of my home be affected?Show

TVs, VCRs and DVD recorders in your home need to go digital, not just your main TV. With Sky Multiroom you can enjoy Sky TV in a second room - meaning you can watch the football or your favourite drama upstairs, while the kids enjoy cartoons downstairs.

What do the two digital switchover stages mean?

Different channels will switch over from analogue to digital at different stages, so make sure you're prepared. With Sky, you won't need to worry about missing out though. You won't lose these channels during the process and you won't need to retune your TV when switchover occurs, unlike with some Freeview boxes.

To receive your HD subscription channels in another room you’ll need either a Sky+HD Box or SkyHD Box and an additional HD pack per box.

Sky Boxes and set-upShow

Self set-up: Self set-up is £15, only available to existing Sky+ customers. You must complete self set-up within 31 days of receipt of your box in order to be eligible for a discounted box, otherwise you will be charged £10.25 pm subscription for the HD Pack for 12 months.

Sky+HD 1TB box: £49 for Sky TV customers taking their first HD package (£10.25pm) or existing Sky+HD customers adding Sky Multiroom (£10.25pm per box). Existing Sky+HD customers are entitled to one £149 box, additional boxes £249. New customers are entitled to one £149 box when taking with HD pack, any additional boxes thereafter or when taking without the HD Pack are £249. Standard set-up £30 for new customers and £60 for existing Sky TV customers. Self set-up option £15 for existing Sky+ or Sky+HD customers. Non-standard set-up may cost extra. SkyHD box: First box free for new and existing customers when taken with a new Sky Multiroom subscription and paying for set-up. Set-up is included in the box installation for new customers and £60 for existing customers.

Sky BroadbandShow

Sky Broadband: You must subscribe to your chosen broadband product for 12 months. Monthly subscription providing you remain a Sky TV and Sky Talk subscriber: Everyday Lite £0, Unlimited £7.50. Connect at £17 pm is available to customers outside our network area. Connect does not give access to Sky Anytime+. Monthly usage caps: Everyday Lite – 2GB; Connect - 40GB & subject to Traffic Management Policy. Maximum upload speed: Everyday Lite and Unlimited - 1.3Mb; Connect - 448Kb. Speed you get depends on factors including distance from the exchange and line quality. See sky.com for more details and our Usage Policies. If your PC/laptop is not wireless enabled, you can buy the necessary equipment from Sky. Wireless coverage depends on variable factors within the home.
